H.R. 6515: Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act of 2020

During the coronavirus pandemic, many states have postponed rent or mortgage payments. For example, Connecticut enacted a 60-day grace period for rent payments and a 90-day grace period for mortgage payments.

But those payments are still due, just on the backend. Some lawmakers are now considering going a step further, by cancelling such payments entirely — without making them due later.

The Next Generation Votes Act [H.R. 734] would permit all 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote before their 18th birthday nationwide.

The bill would not change the federal voting age of 18, which was established by the 26th Amendment in 1971. Rather, it would allow registration earlier so that you’re in the system ahead of time and automatically activated on your 18th birthday.

H.R. 7100: George Floyd Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act of 2020

Named after the 46-year-old man killed in May who sparked the protests, the George Floyd Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act would institute several reforms to police departments nationwide, including:

  • Mandating all local, state, and federal law enforcement bodies report data to the Justice Department on uses of deadly force involving police officers.
  • Giving federal grants to law enforcement agencies which devise new programs for oversight or hiring, such as bringing on more diverse officers and agents.
  • Creating a federal task force to coordinate the investigation and prosecution of law enforcement agencies.
  • Creating a set of federal minimum standards for police departments, standards which do not currently exist.
